Plot
Forty years ago, in a remote village in Chandarpur, a woman delivered twins, a girl, and a boy. While they celebrated the boy’s arrival, the girl was sacrificed in the jungle.  Ambika and Shuvankar are a couple, and they have a daughter, Shweta. When Shuvankar’s father, who lived in Chandarpur, passed away, he had to move there to do his father’s final rites. But, Shuvankar meets a mysterious end, which makes Ambika and Shweta visit Chandarpur. Ambika encounters Amsaja, a demon who is responsible for missing girls in the village. Will she destroy him to save his daughter and other girls?
Star Performance
Kajol’s performance is stunning. She excels in emotional sequences, and her performance is so natural and mind blowing. Indraneil Sengupta is decent in the limited role. The rest of the stars delivered what was required.
Analysis
Maa is a fusion of mother’s courage, mythology, and exciting horror elements. Some jump scares are really effective in making the film a perfect horror thriller. The Kali pooja scene is shot well. Certain scenes induces spirituality and create Goosebumps. However, the film has some flaws, including the pacing issues. While some scenes travel at a fast pace, some are a bit slow. The encounter scene between Ambika and Amsaja looks a bit stretched. Some subplots make us feel disjointed until they are linked in the second half. The film has an equal amount of emotion and horror. Kali Shakti, crooned by

, adds strength to the sequence, and Kajol’s appearance is stunning in that. The visuals and BGM are good.

The film has great performances and good making, despite a few flaws. It’s definitely watchable for Kajol’s career-defining performance!
